Stopped here for lunch while staying at the Greenbrier. At first I didn't have high hopes. The service was incredibly slow, even thought the place was pretty empty. They also had a flier on the table advertising their pies, but I was informed there were none. The food itself, however, was very good. The fries (which I paid extra for) were crispy and delicious. My sandwich -- fried green tomato BLT -- was delicious. The bacon was crispy and not drenched in ranch sauce, just the right amount. Everyone else at my table, most of whom ordered the fried chicken sandwich, was also very happy with their meals. (Something's wrong with the grammar in that last sentence, but I'm too lazy to think it through).

My friends, family and I had a great experience here. They staff was friendly and the food was great. This is a great place to eat when traveling through the WSS area. It's nestled in a great little spot in the town of WSS and provides a buffet! The day we were there it was a barbecue buffet including ribs, pulled pork, baked beans, corn, mac and cheese, etc. It was dynamite. This is home cookin' that is sure to get you full and satisfied. We pulled off in White Sulphur Springs this past Saturday night (6/22/13) to look for food for myself, my wife, and our our two kids (5 and 1). We saw this place and figured it was a slam dun for honest southern family cooking. We are from the Chicago area, so we were hoping to experience a taste of West Virginia, and the ambiance/decor seemed promising. The first thing I noticed was that this place operates on a shoestring... there was ONE server for the entirety of the restaurant. And I counted FORTY-FIVE people seated in the main dining area! A busser/dishwasher type from the back came out every so often to "help", but I'm not really sure he was helping much. The hostess couldn't have acted more disinterested, and preferred to sit behind the counter looking at her fingernails rather than helping out her obviously stressed and over-worked colleague on the floor. She did wander out occasionally to help clear a table, but overall she didn't add any value to the experience. Ever her greeting was tepid and uninviting. There was an unappetizing buffet available, but we opted to order off the menu. Big mistake. After taking 10 minutes to get water brought to the table, we waited an HOUR for simple things off the menu I could have made at home in 10 minutes. Literally. I ordered a club sandwich, and it was two pieces of Brand X white bread with a few slices of Brand Y deli meat and cheese inside, and Brand Z Ruffles Clone potato chips in the middle. If you're going to offer something as basic as a club sandwich, you need to do SOMETHING with it to justify someone having patronized your establishment to get it. Fry your own potato chips, bake the bread you use to build it, locally-source the meat, SOMETHING. You don't insult people by serving them a blah cold-cut sandwich with generic greasy chips that they could have made themselves in 5 minutes at home with ingredients that cost $2. I asked the waitress if they made the "Beer-Battered Onion Rings" on the menu, and she admitted they were frozen. Onion rings are SO easy to make from scratch, how on earth is a place in the sticks of WV with this much aesthetic charm and promise ordering frozen onion rings? She then offered that they "make their own fries", so I said I'd try those. Big mistake. They had an OK flavor, but they were floppy and not crispy at all. Almost like they'd been made several hours ago and thrown in the microwave for my order. Which I know is exactly what happened since some of them were piping hot, and some of them were still cold in the middle. My wife had the highly-touted chicken and dumplings, which she said she liked. It tasted alright to me too, but I knew it had to have come from a giant can in the back room as well. They had no seasoning or flavor at all. The kids at their food, but by this time they were out of their minds with hunger and probably would have eaten their crayons if we'd let them. All in all, this place promised a whole lot more than it delivered. It has a great name, great location, great aesthetics, and foot traffic practically hand-delivered to them from the Interstate... and it serves incredibly mediocre food, has an over-worked wait staff, over-paid host staff,and seems to think that people prefer to go OUT for frozen, packaged foods instead of making it themselves and want to wait an hour for the privilege. I don't get it, but that's what I experienced.

This place had so much potential to be good but was a major disappointment. I didn't check out Yelp before I stopped here (bad move) and ended up getting there during their lunch weekend buffet. The food was sooooo gross. There were scrambled eggs (they were hard), greasy chicken, and tons of greasy food that will make you feel like crap while you're eating it and for hours after. I decided not to eat anything, but the other three people that were there with me ate because they were so hungry. The waitress looked confused when I said I wasn't having anything, and everyone else ate but was grossed out the whole time they were chomping down on the greasy fare. Afterwards, we got in the car to leave and everyone told me how smart I was to not eat and said we should have left and not eaten there at all. They said they felt sick and regretted us going there for days after. Let's just say that I will NEVER be going back to the Mason Jar ever again. A severe disappointment is an understatement.

Took the wife there when we was passing through White Sulphur Springs. The fried green tomatoes were awesome...I got the Reuben and the wife got Asian Chicken Wings...both were outstanding...Sweet Tea made exactly how Sweet Tea is suppose to be made (diabetics steer clear)...:o)....just a wonderful/friendly staff...we will go back next time we're in town!!!!!

The food was abundant and very good. The service however was quite lacking. Very reasonably priced food, but the fact that the staff could care less about you turned us off.. too bad the owners don't understand that good food without good service equals JUST OK

There is nothing special here, except for the cute water jar glasses (which was never refilled during the duration of my meal). Service is very slow, but friendly. Coleslaw was way too sweet. Rib eye did not come with a separate knife and tasted ok. House salad has cheese on it (no diff in points there, just FYI if you don't want it)

Tasty food, polite service, but they were a little in the weeds. The drinks and silverware took forever to get to us and there was just absolutely not enough selection for the price of the buffet. Not to mention the painful pack of bread. We asked what they had as far as bread goes and the best they could do were some pieces of white bread. I'm sure it would be nice on a slower day but for the time we came, it was too much money for what we got.

We are here on our travels and just happened upon it. Partner had the fried chicken sandwich which she thought was excellent. I had the fried green tomato BLT. It was a bit too fried for me, but tasted good. Big slabs of bread. Both came with chips and a pickle. Ice tea and water served in Mason jars. Service was good.

I enjoyed it our group all enjoyed their food. The BBQ looked good, but we didn't eat it. Friendly waiter, good service, seems like a good local in town family restaurant.

Service was excellent and menu was good. They have a lunch buffet but we do not typically eat from buffets. Hours are limited and not open for dinner. Nice alternative to the ever so pricey options at The Greenbrier.

The restaurant was clean and comfortable. The staff was pretty attentive, too. I had the fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans. All were good. If you can, take a few minutes to walk around the town a little.

What a cute little gem of a restaurant. We were passing through WV on our way home from vacation and stopped here for dinner. Food was pretty darn good and the service was small town friendly. Our party of 5 was pretty rowdy from being on the road all day and this was a great place to unwind.

Small town charm at its best. The BF and I ate here and everything was delicious! We visits WV a lot during the summer seeing its the BF birth-home. Their sweet tea is real good too. They have a breakfast bar and a lunch bar on the weekends, it you get there at just the right time you will be able to enjoy a smorgasbord of food as both food bars are fully stocked. We are going to WV again in August, can't wait to eat here again.

We are here on Mothers Day. Slow service. We went there after their rush. There were six of us. We ordered chili cheese fries as an appetizer. It came out with part of the rest of the food, after he had came back and asked if I wanted chili or bacon fries. There was no chili and the cheese was burnt, looked like it had been from the day before. He took it back to the kitchen and later returned informing me he took it off the bill as they were out of chili. One member of our party received her sandwich after everyone had eaten half if our meals and the waiter brought out the other half of another members food at the same time. She said it was worth the wait. He apologized saying there was only one cook in the kitchen. My grilled steak salad was good without the steak strips. They were mixed raw/burnt and fatty. My husbands food was good but he was surprised that the grilled veggies consisted of 4 thin slices of zucchini. The cheddar broccoli soup was loved by another member of our party. The rest of the food was fine. Tim was very nice and apologetic and humble. I would give them another chance as everyone has off days.

I haven't ever actually been here to eat yet, butttt I've had the joy of eating the food that they cater many times, and my taste buds have been pretty spoiled (especially lately; we've gotten picky with our free food opportunities so I've actually started boycotting pizza ._.). My favorites would be their grilled chicken/veggies, as well as their rice with beans. We had a catered lunch from them yesterday and I made sure to go to the gym right before so I'd be able to eat more. Yeah. I've also had their steak and their tacos, and I've basically concluded that they can do no wrong. :D BUT WAIT. THERE'S MORE. The buns. Oh, the buns. They call to me even more so than cookies, cake and ice cream do. (I'm trying to cut weight for a competition right now and given how much I love food, it's been a slow and depressing process. I hate dieting.) Had it not been for that (and, y'know, basic etiquette and stuff) , I could easily have eaten the entire tray. It took all kinds of self-control, a friend's slap on the wrist, and my awesome self-rationalizing ("If you eat all those rolls, you'll become a roll!") to drag me away from the table. sigh. I'm somewhat of a bread fiend, if you couldn't tell. :/

Another reviewer was right. Mason Jar markets itself well in a tourist town. A tourist town that doesn't have a lot of other dinng options. Rick and I learned that if you want a tourist town with a lot of dining options, go to nearby Lewisburg. That's not to say that the food here is bad. It's what you'd get in pretty much any diner. The lunch menu is your standard soups-salads-sandwiches-burgers-wraps fare. I opted for my old standby, a BLT (and anyone that knows me, knows I loves me some good BLT!). My sandwich was just fine--again as good as any I've had--washed down with some ice tea. Of course Mason Jar's gimmick is that they serve beverages in--you guessed it--Mason Jars. Overall I'd give Mason Jar a solid three stars. Not haute cuisine but a good lunch if you're in the area.

Perhaps it's better for dinner, but the buffet lunch left me rather unimpressed. I've dined at and enjoyed many country cookin' type Southern buffets in Florida and Georgia, but the Mason Jar in contrast offered very little variety. Grilled chicken--which was tough--plus hamburger steak and ribs as the meats and old mashed taters and stewed carrots plus a salad bar rounding things out. No desserts included on the buffet, either. The waitress was slow in refilling my sweet tea or checking on me and when I first came in I asked about their chicken n dumplings for lunch and the waitress said "oh well, that will take like half an hour to cook, honey" . . . really? This is why I ordered the buffet instead. I cannot imagine how chicken n dumplings would require such time to prepare and honestly feel the kitchen just didn't want to be bothered with this when I could have the buffet for like a dollar more. Or that the waitress at least saw the matter in this light. Frankly, if this restaurant had not engaged in good marketing and wasn't in a town that gets a decent tourist trade, they'd be seen more or less as your typical hometown restaurant that survives more due to being all that's around in a small town than being something trendy or well-regarded. Maybe dinner is far better, but my lunch experience was lacking. And then there is the matter of their over-use of salt: salt in everything. Like, really an absurd amount of salt. Salt, salt, salt.
